The message that we need to be more conscious of our environment and do our bit to protect it, is spreading. Many of us are trying to live with the mantra of reduce, re-use, recycle and being more aware of how lightly… or not, we tread the earth. So why should moving home not be given the same care and attention?

You’ve taken the first steps in a green direction as you’ve booked the most environmentally friendly mover you can find. Now it’s HOW you move all your stuff that will make a difference to the planet.

Cardboard boxes have been used to move house for what seems like forever. It’s not that they’re bad for the environment, as they can be easily recycled (up to eight times), but as times move along, so do moving methods.

Cardboard containers do have their advantages – they come in various sizes for example, and there are excellent inventions such as wardrobe boxes – but so do practical and eco-friendly recycled plastic boxes. They might come in one size, but they do fit quite a lot and have the added advantage of being easily stackable, thus saving space.

What to consider

We’ve compiled a list of things to consider before you move so as to keep your relocation as green as possible:

1. We’ve said it before, but it’s worth repeating: Declutter your house way before you move. The less stuff you have to move, the more environmentally friendly you are. Decluttering involves throwing irredeemably old, tatty and broken stuff away. It means sorting out what can be donated to an NGO and what can be sold (via a car boot sale or online classified ads). And even what can be stored.

2. Once you’ve decluttered, you can better assess your requirements where boxes are concerned. Could you pack everything into EcoBoxes? Or do you need some cardboard containers too? If so, how many of each?

3. A great way to reduce your carbon footprint is to order all your moving requirements online and from one place. That way you don’t drive anywhere, your supplies all come from a single source, so there’s just one trip involved. [Just click here, and you’ll be sorted with everything from packaging, to cardboard boxes and EcoBoxes!]

4. Check that your packaging supplies, such as bubblewrap and paper, are biodegradable. And ensure the company you use to supply your packaging also promises to recycle it. EcoBox even collects your packaging material and EcoBoxes from your new location once you’ve unpacked, before they recycle it!

5. Just like you asked if your movers had a green company policy in place, and encouraged staff to do the same, does your moving supplies company do the sustainable thing? Do they recycle? Do they care for the community in which they work? With EcoBox 1% of what you pay for renting EcoBoxes is donated to Food & Trees for Africa which plants and grows trees and vegetables, often in disadvantaged areas, for food security and environmental sustainability.

6. Remember to use eco-friendly cleaning products to give your old and new house a thorough going over.
