Here are some of the most useful – and some of the least obvious – moving tools that will make packing, moving and unpacking so much easier. Preparation is key to easing the stresses and strains of a home or office relocation.
1. Wardrobe boxes
Packing your wardrobe is one of the most onerous moving tasks. Wardrobe boxes make it so much faster and easier.
An Ecobox wardrobe box is an extra tall box made of durable, high quality cardboard that comes with a hanger rod in place.
Simply leave your clothes on the existing hangers and pack directly into the portable wardrobe moving box. Hangers slip easily over the internal metal hanging bar.
Our wardrobe boxes measure 530 mm x 480 mm x 990 mm. The box depth – just under a metre – allows clothing to hang properly, helping keep it crease-free. The box width is designed to accommodate standard hangers.
Once you’ve relocated and unpacked, use the wardrobe boxes as extra storage for clothing.
2. Sealable plastic moving crates
Sourcing boxes for a household move can be a hassle. Ecoboxes are the most convenient, affordable and eco-friendly option.
Each Ecobox is a sturdy, sealable, plastic moving box, with a 70-litre capacity and dimensions of 600 mm x 400 mm x 400 mm.
An Ecobox doesn’t have to be assembled or manually sealed using packaging tape. It won’t sag or split, isn’t susceptible to damage due to moisture and provides protection for fragile items.
You can rent our eco-friendly boxes and we’ll deliver them to your doorstep. Once you’ve finished, we’ll pick them up again, at a time that suits you.

3. Colour-coded labels
It’s easier to stay organised while packing – and during unpacking – if you’re able to identify boxes for different rooms. Colour-coded labels make this easy.
You can buy colour-coded moving labels with the name of the room on or make your own with coloured stickers available at stationery stores.
4. Cordless screwdriver
Unscrewing furniture can be done manually, but a cordless screwdriver makes the process so much faster and easier.
A cordless screwdriver can cost as little as R269 and will help you reassemble furniture at your new home. Remember to make sure it’s charged.
5. Moving trolley for rent
A moving trolley can protect your back as well as speed up your move. It makes moving heavy and bulky items, such as furniture, stacked boxes and books, so much easier.
It also saves on moving costs by enabling you to move items yourself. At Ecobox, we rent moving trolleys and deliver to your door.
Just order a trolley online – along with any other packing boxes and materials – and we’ll deliver it to your doorstep. We’ll also collect the trolley once you’ve finished using it.
6. Spare cardboard boxes
They don’t need to be new, but a supply of spare cardboard boxes can help prevent scratching and scuffing on hardwood floors and tiles. Lie boxes flat in entrance ways where the foot and trolley traffic are heaviest.
7. Grab stick
During the packing and moving process, there are times when you need to reach something that’s hard to access. A reach or grab stick lets you to extend your arm length to pick up the item from anywhere, such as on top of a wardrobe or a high shelf.
8. Shoe covers
Moving day involves numerous people going in and out of your home bringing in dirt and grime. Shoe covers protect floors and carpets at the home you’re leaving and the one you’re moving into.
Professional movers should have shoe covers, but your helpers won’t. A 50-pair box of disposable shoe covers will stop you from having to clean your floors and carpets after the move is done.
9. Furniture blankets
Moving blankets can guard against damage during your move. They help prevent scratches and blemishes, dents and dings, as well as protect your possessions from spills, dirt, dust and moisture.
They’re ideal for adding padding to boxes or between fragile packed items such as glassware and mirrors.
Made of recycled fibres, our furniture blankets are inexpensive but ideal for preventing damage to furniture, large appliances such as ovens or washing machines, large mirrors and other items during moves.
Once you’ve completed a move or your items come out of storage, you can use our furniture blankets for other purposes, such as pet blankets.
10. Bungee cords
Bungee cords help secure boxes and other items in your car, bakkie or moving van. They provide a fast, stretchable solution for fastening boxes into a corner or side of the vehicle.
