Planning a big move? If the answer is yes, you’re going to need a whole lot of packing tape. The wrong tape can make an already stressful event much harder than it needs to be.
When it comes to the moving process, not all tapes are created equal. Keep your possessions safe and secure by choosing the most foolproof packing tape for every scenario.
Masking tape
An old faithful that all of us have stashed away in a household drawer, masking tape has many uses. The one thing it should never be used for: sealing boxes.
That doesn’t mean it can’t be a handy packing tape for a move. Masking tape is great for quickly bundling small utensils or other loose items. It’s secure enough to keep items together, and its adhesive pulls away smoothly.
Masking tape is easy to peel and place, and an excellent tape to write on. While it may not be great for sealing, it’s perfect for labelling.
Packing tape
The hint is in the name – packing tape is ideal for moving purposes. This tape uses a hot-melt adhesive that provides superior holding power, but that isn’t too difficult to remove.
Thin, sturdy, and strong enough to withstand just about anything, packing tape can secure boxes in a wide range of environments. Its adhesive is incredibly long-lasting and works in all environments.
Packing tape can withstand typical fluctuations in temperature. It’s extremely strong, but rips off with ease when it’s finally time to unpack your boxes.
Shipping tape
This packing tape is another great option for moving. The sturdiest of the lot, shipping tape is generally used for mailing and shipping packages.
Its extra-strong adhesion protects boxes that could experience rough handling on their journey to a new location.
Shipping tape is a little on the pricier side, but definitely worth the purchase if your moving boxes have an especially long road ahead of them.
Duct tape
Duct tape’s hardy surface is often reinforced with cloth or plastic. This can make it tough to work with, but also extremely resilient.
Its rubber adhesive and waterproof backing make it a versatile packing tape, but it generally shouldn’t be used for the biggest job of all: sealing and securing boxes.
Duct tape sticks fast to just about everything – except cardboard. Because it’s not resistant to fluctuations in temperature, a temperature change could make this tape pull away from the box it’s sealing, putting your possessions at risk.
If, however, you’re looking for a packing tape that’s suitable for wrapping carpets, flooring, or household cables, duct tape can be a brilliant solution.
Filament tape
This packing tape is similar to shipping tape, but the major difference is that it’s reinforced with an inner fiberglass lining that makes it difficult to rip and cut.
The fiberglass strands in filament tape provide added support for boxes and bundles that may be jostled or exposed to temperature changes in storage.
Like duct tape, it’s great for bundling big household items and securing loose parts for transit.
